Classic vs. Antique: What's the Difference?
Antique Vehicles (25+ Years Old)
Vehicles manufactured 25 or more years before the current year qualify for antique registration:
- Must be maintained as a collector's item
- Cannot be used for daily transportation
- Limited to occasional use (shows, parades, tours)
- Receive special "Antique" plates
Classic Vehicles (15-24 Years Old)
Vehicles 15-24 years old may qualify for classic registration if maintained as a collector's item and used occasionally.
Inspection Exemptions
Antique Plates: Inspection EXEMPT
Vehicles with official Pennsylvania Antique plates are exempt from annual safety inspection. However, the vehicle must still be safe to operate.
Classic Plates: Inspection REQUIRED
Vehicles with Classic plates still require annual safety inspection but are exempt from emissions testing in all counties.
