Salvage title vehicles in Pennsylvania require a special enhanced inspection before they can be registered for road use.
What Is a Salvage Title?
A salvage title is issued when a vehicle is total loss, flood damaged, fire damaged, or recovered theft with significant damage.
Before You Can Register
Salvage vehicles cannot be registered or driven on public roads until:
- Vehicle is fully repaired
- Enhanced safety inspection is completed
- Title is converted to "Reconstructed"
The Enhanced Inspection Process
- Full safety inspection: All normal inspection items
- Structural inspection: Frame, unibody, structural components
- VIN verification: Confirm vehicle identity
- Parts documentation: Verify parts sources
Required Documentation
- Salvage title
- Parts receipts for all major replacement parts
- Photos documenting repairs
- Form MV-426 (Rebuilt/Restored Vehicle Checklist)
Cost of Enhanced Inspection
- Enhanced inspection: $75-150
- Title conversion: Additional PennDOT fees
- Total process: Plan for $200-300 in fees
After Passing Inspection
Salvage title converts to "Reconstructed" title. Vehicle can be registered for road use. Annual regular inspections required going forward.
