Understanding PA Re-Inspection Requirements
After receiving a rejection notice and completing repairs, you must return to a certified inspection station to have your vehicle tested again.
The Critical 30-Day Re-Inspection Window
You have until the end of the following calendar month after your initial failure to get re-inspected at reduced or no cost.
- Fail on March 5 → Have until April 30 (55 days)
- Fail on March 28 → Have until April 30 (33 days)
Choosing Where to Get Re-Inspected
You are NOT required to return to the original station. Any certified PA station can re-inspect your vehicle.
Original Station vs. New Station
Same Station Benefits:
- Documentation of original failures on file
- Often free or discounted re-inspection
- Familiarity with your vehicle's issues
Different Station Benefits:
- Second opinion on repair quality
- May be more convenient location
- Option if dissatisfied with original station
Understanding Re-Inspection Fees
- Free Re-Inspection: Common when returning to same station within 30 days
- Reduced Fee ($10-25): Some stations offer this for returning customers
- Full Fee ($35-90): When going to different station or after 30-day window
Preparing for Re-Inspection
Before your re-inspection:
- Verify all repairs on your rejection notice were completed
- Test all lights, brakes, and other previously failed items yourself
- Gather repair receipts and original rejection documentation
- For emissions repairs, drive 50-100 miles to reset monitors
