Why Preparation Matters
Approximately 15-20% of vehicles fail Pennsylvania inspection on the first attempt. Most failures involve simple, easily preventable issues.
Complete Pre-Inspection Checklist
Lighting Systems (30% of Failures)
Check all lights: headlights (low/high), turn signals (front/rear), brake lights, tail lights, license plate light, reverse lights, hazard lights.
Tires and Wheels (15% of Failures)
Minimum 2/32" tread depth, no bulges or damage, proper inflation, all lug nuts present.
Windshield and Wipers
No cracks in driver's view, wipers clear without streaking, washer fluid filled.
Braking System
Watch for grinding, squealing, soft pedal, or pulling. Parking brake must hold on incline.
Steering and Suspension
No excessive play, unusual noises, or pulling to one side.
Special Preparation for Emissions Testing
In 25 emissions counties, check engine light must be OFF. If recently disconnected battery, drive 50-100 miles for monitors to complete.
Documents to Bring
- Your current vehicle registration card. The inspection mechanic is required to verify your registration is valid before performing the inspection — if your registration is expired, the inspection cannot be done.
- Proof of insurance. Bring your insurance card or digital proof. Pennsylvania law (75 Pa.C.S. § 1786) requires you to carry insurance to operate the vehicle, and most inspection stations ask to see it as part of intake. Bringing it avoids any chance of being turned away.
- Previous inspection failure notice (if applicable) — helpful if you are returning for a re-inspection.
- Payment. Cash, check, or card depending on the station — call ahead if you need to confirm.
The Day Before Inspection
- Wash your vehicle
- Clear interior clutter
- Test everything one final time
- Fill washer fluid
